I regularly radiograph dogs for the following hip and elbow dysplasia schemes:

Under UK radiology health and safety regulations, dogs must not be held manually.
Therefore heavy sedation or general anaesthesia has to be used for accurate positioning.
Your dog will be given heavy sedation that is rapidly reversable at the end of the procedure. This is fundamentally a very safe method in healthy dogs.
Owners are encouraged to wait while the X-rays are taken and this is generally for less than 30 minutes. Your dog will walk back to you but will be quiet for several hours.
The X-rays will be evaluated by myself and my opinion as to the likely hip or elbow score will be given. They are then sent electronically to the BVA for scoring with the results usually available within two weeks.
